Well, the day we’ve been waiting for finally arrived…..and it was definitely worth it!

At the start of P7, Mrs Williamson the art teacher told us about a competition that the new Asda in Stenhousemuir was running in conjunction with McCowans Toffee. The children had to design a new wrapper for the Highland Toffee bar to celebrate the opening of Asda and the winning entry would be printed and a special limited edition toffee wrapper would be made.

Well, Seonaid from our class was the lucky winner and not only did her design get printed onto highland toffee bar wrappers, she also got to open the new Asda! …..we all got a free bar of toffee too!

However the best was saved till last, as the final part of Seonaid’s prize was that she and all of her class were invited to the McCowan’s factory to see exactly what goes on in there!

We had a fabulous time and the staff there were lovely and so kind to us all! We all came home with hands full of freebies and some fabulous memories.

So a big thanks to McCowans and an even bigger thanks to Seonaid for giving us all such a fantastic day.

We have other pictures of inside the factory but we have to wait to see if we are allowed to show these on our blog. (fingers crossed)

SET Fair

On Friday 13th March P7W/N and P7F went to Grangemouth to take part in the Ineos Set Fair.
We had opportunities to be involved in practical science activities linked to the science curriculum.
We made electrical circuits, volcanoes and copies of the UK’s largest mobile crane. We also got to touch fossilised poo, watch a ‘science cake’ being made and learn about the properties of elements.
It was a fun day and we hope you enjoy the pictures of us!

Evacuees!

We visited Callendar House in Falkirk to learn more about what happened to children and adults in the Falkirk area during World War 2.

We had a great time touching real World War 2 artefacts and dressing up in costume and pretending to be children who were being evacuated.

Christmas Party

I know it was ages ago but here are some pictures of the Primary Seven classes at their Christmas Party. We all had a super time. The teachers were all delighted with the children that night… they behaved well, danced brilliantly and looked super!



Our Wikis

Everyone in P7W/N now has a wiki. I went to visit Mrs Vass, as she is far better at these things than I am, and she helped me to set them all up. She was very patient with me!

There is a link to our wiki page in the sidebar on the right hand side of the blog and from there you can visit the individual wikis. Some are looking super!

All wikis should now have a new front page and at least one link to a new page.

Hopefully some children will write some interesting things on their wikis that we can transfer to our class blog too!

Hopefully P7 will enjoy using their wikis! I look forward to reading them!

Ps. I’ve just learned that we should not be using photos in our wikis. I apologise to all that I allowed to use photos. I assumed it was ok as the wikis were a part of our blog but that is not the case. Photos are allowed on our blog as we have permission for this. Sorry again….still learning!

Assembly

Recently the Primary 7′s presented their assembly to the school and their families. They spoke about children in Malawi. This is something we are covering in our social studies work, where we compare our lives with those of people in another part of the world.

The children told the audience about Mary’s Meals. This is a Scottish company that provide food, in school, for children in many countries of the world, including Malawi. We had conducted a survey throughout the school and found out that, on average, more than £1200 is spent feeding a child in Carronshore Primary School every year. It costs Mary’s Meals from £5.30 to feed a child in Malawi for a year!

Our favourite and most thought provoking fact that we found out was that it would cost £17 million to feed all the children in Malawi for a year. Last year we spent £220 million pounds on Easter eggs in our country!

The P7′s will be co-ordinating school fund raising activities - starting in earnest in 2009 and we are eager to see how many children in Malawi we can raise money to feed. Each time £5.30 is raised, a figure will be put on display in the hall beside our Malawian book cover picture. Already there are 4 there and more to come thanks to the generosity of the family and friends who came to our assembly on Friday.

Well done to Primary 7 for their super work so far!

I’ve learned how to make a Weemee! I’ve also made a voki but I can’t get that to appear!!

Primary 7 are far better at this kind of thing than me so they’re keeping me right! When I get better at blogging maybe we can all add our own to the site. I’ll need to find out if that’s possible first though.

“Genre” learning logs

Last week P7 were producing a learning log discussing 4 different types of fictional genre.

Most agreed that it was a tough job!

We have been looking at genre during language time whilst using our new literacy text book and Mrs Nimmo and I have been impressed with the way the children have been working here.

I really enjoyed reading the logs this week and I can tell that the children found this topic harder than any other we have covered…..they all used less paper!

However, the results produced were what I was looking for (WILF) and I think most did a great job!

This week we have been learning about people in Malawi. Malawi is a country in Africa that has strong links with Scotland. For part of our social studies work we are comparing our lives, as children who live and learn in Scotland, to those of children in another country.

One of the aspects we are focusing on is food. Recently we conducted a food survey throughout the school and we are comparing what we eat daily with what the children in Malawi eat daily.

We have learned that one of the main things the children in Malawi eat is nsima. This is a bit like porridge and is made from maize flour and water.

We had a go at making this to-day. Some children had a taste and although it wasn’t the best taste most who tried it said it was ok and tasted like dried pasta. They have all lived to tell the tale so far!

We took some pictures but I don’t think the flash was on so they are not the best quality. We are still learning!

We will be telling the school all about Malawi next Friday afternoon at our Primary 7 assembly. Hopefully some of the primary 7′s family and friends can come along and hear what they have to say.
